Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Roger Drake (1608–1669) was an English doctor and a minister who strongly believed in the Presbyterian church.

Early Life and Education

Roger Drake was born in 1608. His father was a successful merchant in London. Roger went to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he earned his first degree in 1628 and his master's degree in 1631.

When he was 30, Roger decided to study medicine. He went to Leyden in 1638 and became a doctor there in 1639. For his first major paper, he supported William Harvey's idea about how blood circulates in the body. Another doctor, James Primrose, disagreed with him, and Drake wrote a reply.

Becoming a Minister

Roger Drake became a doctor in England in 1643. However, in 1646, he decided to change his path and become a minister instead.

He was a very dedicated Presbyterian. In 1651, he was involved in a political event known as Christopher Love's plot. He was arrested by the government but was later pardoned without having to go to trial.

In 1653, Drake became the minister at St. Peter's Cheap church. He was also supposed to attend an important religious meeting called the Savoy conference, but he didn't go due to a mistake. He often preached at other churches, including St. Giles-in-the-Fields and Cripplegate.

Roger Drake lived in Stepney towards the end of his life and passed away in the summer of 1669. Samuel Annesley, another minister, gave a speech at his funeral and praised his writings about history and time.

His Writings

Roger Drake wrote several books and sermons, mostly on religious topics.

His medical writings included:

  • Disputatio de Convulsione (1640)
  • Disputationum sexta, de Tremore (1640)

Some of his religious works were:

  • Sacred Chronologie (1648): This book used the Bible to explain the timeline from the creation of the world to the time of Jesus.
  • A Boundary to the Holy Mount (1653): This book discussed who should be allowed to take part in the Lord's Supper, a religious ceremony.
  • The Believer's Dignity and Duty laid Open (1660): This was a sermon about the importance and responsibilities of a believer.
