Roger Pingeon (born August 28, 1940 – died March 19, 2017) was a famous road bicycle racer from France. He was known for winning two of the biggest cycling races in the world: the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
Who Was Roger Pingeon?
Roger Pingeon grew up near the Jura Mountains in France. When he was a teenager, he enjoyed cross-country skiing. Later, he switched to bicycle racing. He served two years in the military in Algeria. After that, he started his professional cycling career a bit later than some riders. He raced as a professional cyclist from 1964 to 1974.
His Big Wins in Cycling
Roger Pingeon had a very successful career. In 1967, he achieved his biggest dream: he won the Tour de France. This is one of the most challenging and famous bicycle races in the world.
Two years later, in 1969, he won another major race, the Vuelta a España. This race is held in Spain and is also a very tough competition. That same year, he finished second in the Tour de France, right behind the legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx.
Throughout his career, Roger Pingeon won a total of four individual stages in the Tour de France. A stage win means he was the fastest rider on that particular day of the race. He also finished among the top five riders in the Tour de France three times overall.
After he stopped racing, Roger Pingeon worked as a sports expert. He was a consultant for a Swiss TV and radio station from 1979 to 1998. He passed away on March 19, 2017, at his home in Beaupont, France, after having a heart attack.
