Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Roger Planchon (born on September 12, 1931, in Saint-Chamond, Loire; died on May 12, 2009, in Paris) was a famous French playwright, director, and filmmaker. He was known for his creative work in theater and film.

About Roger Planchon

Roger Planchon grew up in the Ardèche region of France, especially in a place called Dornas. His childhood in the countryside often inspired his plays and films. This connection to his rural roots was a big theme in his work.

He started acting on stage in 1949 after winning an amateur theater competition. In 1952, he opened his own theater company called the Théâtre de la Comédie in Lyon. Later, in 1957, he became the director of the Théâtre de la Cité in Villeurbanne. This theater later became the very important Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) in 1972.

Roger Planchon brought many classic plays to life, including works by Brecht, Molière, and Shakespeare. He also worked with modern writers like Arthur Adamov and Michel Vinaver. He was also known for inviting other talented directors, like Patrice Chéreau and Georges Lavaudant, to work at the Théâtre National Populaire.

Besides his theater work, Roger Planchon also directed several films. Some of his notable films include George Dandin ou le Mari confondu (based on a play by Molière) and Louis, enfant roi, which was even shown at the famous Cannes Film Festival. He also directed a film about the artist Lautrec. He passed away on May 12, 2009, and is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.Kids robot.svg In Spanish: Roger Planchon para niños
