Early Life and Family
Roger Vadim was born in Paris, France. His full name was Roger Vadim Plemiannikov. His father, Igor Nikolaevich Plemiannikov, was from Russia. He was a military officer and a pianist. He became a French citizen.
Roger's father worked as a diplomat for France. This meant Roger lived in places like Northern Africa and the Middle East when he was very young. His mother, Marie-Antoinette, was a French actress.
When Roger was nine, his father passed away. His family then moved back to France. His mother managed a hostel in the French Alps. This hostel helped people, including Jewish people, escape from the Nazis.
Vadim later studied journalism and writing at the University of Paris. He did not finish his degree there.
Starting a Film Career
Working with Marc Allégret
When Roger Vadim was 19, he started working in movies. He became an assistant to a film director named Marc Allégret. Vadim met Allégret while working at a theater.
He helped Allégret with several movie scripts. Vadim was an assistant director for Allégret's film Blanche Fury in 1948. He also helped write The Naked Heart (1950) and Blackmailed (1951).
Vadim continued to work with Allégret. He wrote the script for Julietta (1953), a popular romance movie. He also wrote Loves of Three Queens (1954).
Working with Brigitte Bardot
Vadim started a relationship with a model and actress named Brigitte Bardot. She got a big role in a movie called School for Love (1953). Vadim wrote the script for this film with Allégret.
Another movie with Bardot, Naughty Girl (1956), was very successful in France. This success helped Vadim get the chance to direct his first movie.
Vadim's first film as a director was And God Created Woman (1956). It starred Brigitte Bardot. The movie was a huge hit in France and around the world. It made Bardot a famous star.
After this, Vadim directed No Sun in Venice (1957). It was not as popular. He then made The Night Heaven Fell (1958), also starring Bardot.
Vadim wrote and directed Les liaisons dangereuses (1959). This movie was a big success in France. It starred Jeanne Moreau and Gérard Philipe. It also featured Annette Stroyberg, who became Vadim's second wife.
Stroyberg also appeared in the vampire movie Blood and Roses (1960). Vadim and Stroyberg later divorced.
Vadim worked with Bardot again on the comedy Please, Not Now! (1961). He also directed a part of the movie The Seven Deadly Sins (1962).
Vadim began a relationship with young actress Catherine Deneuve. She appeared in a film Vadim helped write, And Satan Calls the Turns (1962). She also starred in Vice and Virtue (1963), which Vadim directed.
Vadim had another hit with Bardot, Love on a Pillow (1962). However, his film Nutty, Naughty Chateau (1963) was less popular.
Working with Jane Fonda
Roger Vadim had a romantic relationship with the American actress Jane Fonda.
Vadim created a movie especially for Fonda called The Game Is Over (1966). It was based on a book. The film was popular in France.
He also directed Fonda in a part of the horror movie Spirits of the Dead (1968). Her brother, Peter Fonda, was also in this film.
During his marriage to Fonda, Vadim often traveled with her to the United States for her movies. After they separated, Vadim directed Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971) in the US. This movie did not do well.
Later Film Work
Vadim returned to France. He directed Hellé (1972), which was not successful. He worked with Brigitte Bardot one last time on Don Juan, or If Don Juan Were a Woman (1973). This was one of Bardot's last movies and it did not do well.
In the 1980s, Vadim spent time in the United States. He directed Night Games (1980). He also directed a movie in Canada called The Hot Touch (1981).
Back in France, he wrote and directed Surprise Party (1983). He also directed episodes for TV shows like Faerie Tale Theatre (1984).
Vadim tried to recreate his earlier success with a new version of And God Created Woman (1988). This new movie, starring Rebecca de Mornay, was very different from the original. It was not popular with critics or audiences.
In his final years, Vadim worked in television. He directed Safari (1991). He also wrote and directed Amour fou (1993). This movie starred Marie-Christine Barrault, who became his last wife. She also appeared in his later TV projects, La Nouvelle tribu (1996) and Un coup de baguette magique (1997).
