Rogerson's Village Historic District is a special old mill village located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, United States. It's a place where people used to make cotton products a long time ago. This village shows us what early industrial towns in New England were like.

Building a Mill Village

The village was created by a man named Robert Rogerson. His family came from England. In 1817, Robert Rogerson bought an older mill called the Clapp Mill. This mill was built around 1810 on the Mumford River in Uxbridge. It was the very first cotton mill in Uxbridge.

Robert Rogerson had a big dream. He wanted to build a complete mill village. He made sure to include everything needed for the mill, his own home, a company store, and houses for the workers.

The Crown and Eagle Mills

Between 1823 and 1827, Robert Rogerson built two new cotton mills. These were also located along the Mumford River in Uxbridge. He named them the Crown Mill and the Eagle Mill. Together, they were known as the Crown and Eagle Mills.

The Crown Mill was named after England, where Robert's parents were from. The Eagle Mill was named for the United States, his family's new home. These mills were very well-designed. People even called them an "architectural masterpiece."

Sadly, the Crown and Eagle Mills burned down around 1975. But they were later rebuilt and now serve as homes for senior citizens. Today, Rogerson's Village is part of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. This corridor helps protect and share the history of this important industrial area.

Life in Rogerson's Village

The village was carefully planned. It had the large mills where cotton was spun into thread and fabric. There was also a special store, known as the Larkin Building today. This store sold goods to the mill workers.

The village also had many homes for the people who worked in the mills. These houses were built around 1824. They show how mill villages were set up using the "Rhode Island System." This system provided housing and services for workers near the factories.

Changes Over Time

Robert Rogerson owned the Crown and Eagle Mills until about 1837. His business faced difficulties, and he eventually sold it. The mills were then bought by James Whitin and the Whitin Family. They continued to operate the mills, calling them the Uxbridge Cotton Mills.

If you want to learn more about the Whitin family and their businesses, you can look up Whitinsville, Massachusetts. Rogerson's Village Historic District is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
