Rogliano facts for kids

Rogliano is a charming town in southern Italy. It is located in the Calabria region, specifically in the province of Cosenza. Rogliano is nestled in the beautiful Savuto Valley.

This town has a long history. It was largely destroyed by a big earthquake in 1638. Rogliano is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) away from the city of Cosenza.

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1717. It is a very important church in Rogliano. Its main bell is even older, dating all the way back to 1333! This bell was saved after the 1638 earthquake. The church was rebuilt quickly after the disaster. Its inside has three sections, designed in the beautiful Baroque style.

Church of Santa Maria alle Croci

You can find the Church of Santa Maria alle Croci in the Cuti district. This church was built towards the end of the 1500s.

Church of Santi Domenico e Nicola

The Church of Santi Domenico e Nicola dates back to the 1600s. Inside, it has one main section. The painting on the main altar is a mosaic copy of a work by Sassoferrato. It shows the Madonna and Child with Saint Dominic and Saint Rita.

Church of San Giorgio

The Church of San Giorgio is in the Donnanni district. It was built in the early 1500s and shows the Renaissance style. The building was finished in 1544. It was built where an even older temple once stood, dating back to 1181.

Church of Sant'Ippolito

The Church of Sant'Ippolito started as a small chapel in 1638. It was first dedicated to the Virgin of Health. Between 1702 and 1707, the chapel was made bigger and dedicated to Sant'Ippolito.

Church of San Michele

The small Church of San Michele is from the 1700s. It is located in the Serra district. This church is a good example of a simple country church.

Church of the Madonna delle Grazie

The Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, also called "Camina," was built in 1569. It has a very special ceiling. This ceiling is beautifully crafted and covered in pure gold.

The Church dedicated to St. Joseph has a unique design. It is shaped like a Greek Orthodox cross and has an octagonal dome. Today, this church is used as a museum for sacred art.

Palazzo Ricciulli

Palazzo Ricciulli is in the Spani district. A marble plaque there shows that Charles V once stayed in this palace.

Piazza San Domenico

Piazza San Domenico is the main meeting spot for people in Rogliano. The beautiful 1700s church of Santi Domenico e Nicola overlooks this square. The town hall, which used to be a Dominican convent, is also here. You can also find the municipal villa in the square.
