Rold Gold is a well-known brand of pretzels. It started as a company called "American Cone and Pretzel Company" in 1917. A businessman named Lorraine Schumaker from Philadelphia created it. Today, Rold Gold is owned by Frito-Lay, a big snack company.
The Story of Rold Gold Pretzels
Early Days and Growth
For its first 50 years, Rold Gold was a family business. It grew and opened new locations in St. Louis, Missouri, and El Segundo, California. The company became known for making tasty pretzels.
From 1921 to 1955, the company also owned a plant that canned pimentos. This plant was near Macon, Georgia. However, they sold this part of the business in 1955. This happened because there was more competition from other canning companies.
Changing Owners
The Schumaker family sold Rold Gold in 1960. It was bought by Red Dot Foods Inc. from Madison, Wisconsin. But this deal did not last long. Red Dot Foods faced problems and went out of business.
Then, in 1961, Frito-Lay bought Rold Gold. Frito-Lay has owned the pretzel company ever since.
Rold Gold Today
Since Frito-Lay bought it, Rold Gold has grown even more. Its pretzels are now sold all across the United States. For a while, Rold Gold said it was "America's No. 1 Pretzel." This was based on how much money it made from sales.
However, by 2014, Rold Gold was the second most popular pretzel brand. Snyder's of Hanover became the top pretzel brand in the U.S.
Rold Gold offers many different kinds of pretzels and snacks. All of these snacks are baked, not fried. Most Rold Gold products are also free of lactose.
