Rolf Liebermann (born September 14, 1910 – died January 2, 1999) was a talented musician from Switzerland. He was a composer, meaning he wrote music. He also helped run big opera houses. He was the Artistic Director of the Hamburg State Opera for many years. Later, he led the Paris Opera too.

Rolf Liebermann's Life Story
Rolf Liebermann was born in Zürich, Switzerland. He loved music from a young age. He studied how to write music (composition) and how to lead an orchestra (conducting). His teachers included Hermann Scherchen and Wladimir Vogel.
Liebermann wrote many different kinds of music. He composed chansons (French songs), classical pieces, and even light music. His classical music often mixed different styles. He used ideas from Baroque, Classical, and even twelve-tone music.
Leading Opera Houses
Rolf Liebermann was the director of the Hamburg State Opera from 1959 to 1973. He returned to this role from 1985 to 1988. During his time in Hamburg, he asked composers to create 24 new operas. Some famous operas he helped bring to life include The Devils by Krzysztof Penderecki and Der Prinz von Homburg by Hans Werner Henze.
Between his two times in Hamburg, he was the director of the Paris Opera. He worked there from 1973 to 1980. Liebermann passed away in Paris.
Eurovision and Other Roles
In 1956, Rolf Liebermann had an important job at the very first Eurovision Song Contest. He was the president of the jury. This meant he was in charge of making sure the judging was fair. He helped finalize the results from seven different countries.
He also served on the jury for important music competitions. In 1992, he was a judge for the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition in Spain. In 1989, he led the jury at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival.
