Roman dodecahedron facts for kids
A Roman dodecahedron is a small, mysterious object from the time of the Roman Empire. These objects are shaped like a dodecahedron, which is a solid shape with twelve flat sides. Each of these sides is a five-sided shape called a pentagon.
Over one hundred of these dodecahedra have been found across Europe. They were discovered in areas that were once part of the Roman Empire. Most of them were found in what is now France and Germany. Some were also found in Hungary and Great Britain.
These ancient objects were made from bronze or stone. They are hollow inside. Each of their twelve pentagon faces has a hole in it. They also have small knobs at each corner. These dodecahedra are usually small, measuring between 4 and 11 centimeters (about 1.5 to 4.3 inches).

- Dice: Some people think they might have been used as a type of dice for games.
- Surveying Tools: They could have been tools for measuring land or distances.
- Farming Tools: Another idea is that they helped farmers. They might have been used to figure out the best time to plant winter crops.
- Water Pipe Calibrators: Some believe they were used to check the size or flow of water pipes.
- Army Standards: They might have been bases for military flags or symbols.
- Religious Objects: Many dodecahedra were found at Gallo-Roman sites. These were places where Roman and Gallic cultures mixed. This suggests they might have had a special meaning in religion or rituals.
Despite all these ideas, the true purpose of the Roman dodecahedron remains a secret from the past. Archaeologists and historians continue to study them, hoping to unlock their mystery.
