In the 1990s, Romano Mattè was invited to Indonesia. He worked with young football players there. His job was to guide the Under-18, Under-21, and pre-Olympic teams. This was part of a special agreement between the Italian club Sampdoria and the Football Association of Indonesia.

Mattè was in charge of the Indonesian national team, often called the Garuda. He led them in the 1995 Southeast Asian Games.
