Romano Mattè (born on January 17, 1939) is a football coach from Italy. He is known for leading the Mali national team from 2000 to 2001. Besides coaching in Italy, he also worked in Indonesia and Mali.
Romano Mattè's Coaching Journey
Romano Mattè has had a long and interesting career in football. He started coaching youth teams in Italy. Over the years, he managed many different clubs. His journey took him to various parts of Italy. He worked with teams like Calcio Padova and U.S. Alessandria Calcio 1912.
Coaching in Indonesia
In the 1990s, Romano Mattè was invited to Indonesia. He worked with young football players there. His job was to guide the Under-18, Under-21, and pre-Olympic teams. This was part of a special agreement between an Italian club, Sampdoria, and the Football Association of Indonesia.
Mattè was the coach for the Indonesian national team, known as the Garuda, during the 1995 Southeast Asian Games. He helped discover talented young players. Some of these players, like Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto and Kurnia Sandy, later went to play for Sampdoria in Italy. Mattè often spoke about how much he admired the local people in Indonesia. He found them very respectful and humble.
Coaching in Mali
In the summer of 2000, Romano Mattè became the coach for the Mali national team. He noticed how passionate people in Mali were about football. He also observed that local traditions were sometimes connected to the sport.
His time as Mali's coach ended in early 2001. Before he left, he watched Les Aigles (the Eagles), which is Mali's team nickname, win against South Africa with a score of 2–0. After this, he returned to Italy.
