Romano Mussolini (born September 26, 1927 – died February 3, 2006) was an Italian jazz musician. He was a talented pianist, a painter, and also worked as a film producer. He was the fourth and youngest son of Benito Mussolini, who was a powerful leader of Italy from 1925 to 1943.
Life and Music Career
Romano Mussolini was born in Villa Carpena, a place near Forlì in Italy. From a young age, he loved music. He even played classical music on the violin with his father.
After World War II ended, Romano started playing jazz music. He used a different name, "Romano Full," to keep his identity private at first. By the mid-1950s, he had formed his own music group, a trio.
In 1956, he released his first record with RCA Records. Later, in the 1960s, he created a band called the "Romano Mussolini All Stars." This group became one of the most famous jazz bands in Italy.
The All Stars recorded popular albums like Jazz Allo Studio 7 in 1963. They also toured around the world. They played with many famous jazz artists. Some of these included Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and Chet Baker. In the 1990s, Romano Mussolini recorded two more albums, Perfect Alibi and Soft and Swing.
People described his piano playing as a bit sad but always very good. He was known for making his music flow smoothly and on time.
Family Life
In 1962, Romano Mussolini married Maria Scicolone. She was the younger sister of the famous actress Sophia Loren. Romano and Maria had two daughters. Their names are Elisabetta and Alessandra Mussolini. Alessandra later became a member of the European Parliament. She also led a political party in Italy.
Romano Mussolini later married a second wife, Carla Maria Puccini. With Carla, he had a third daughter named Rachele. She was named after his mother, Rachele Mussolini.
Romano Mussolini usually did not talk much about his family's past. However, in 2004, he wrote a book. It was called Il Duce, mio padre, which means The Leader, my father. In this book, he shared his personal memories. He also wrote about conversations he had with his father. He published another similar book in 2005.
Later Years and Passing
Romano Mussolini passed away in 2006. He was 78 years old. He died in a hospital in Rome because of heart problems.
