Political Career
Italian Parliament
In 1992, Alessandra Mussolini was elected to the Italian parliament. She represented a Naples constituency. She was a member of the Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI) party. After the Italian general elections in April 2008, Mussolini became a member of the Italian parliament. She was part of Silvio Berlusconi's group of right-wing parties, called The People of Freedom.
In the Italian general election of February 2013, she was elected to the Senate of the Republic. She was a member of The People of Freedom party. This party later became a new party called Forza Italia in November 2013. In the 2014 European Parliament election, Mussolini was elected to the European Parliament for Forza Italia.
Forming Social Action
Mussolini left the National Alliance party in November 2003. After leaving, she formed her own party called Social Action. It was first named "Freedom of Action." She also created a group of parties called Social Alternative. This made her the first woman to lead a political party in Italy. She has been described as a strong supporter of women's rights.
European Parliament
In the 2004 European Parliament election, her party, Social Alternative, received 1.2% of the votes. Mussolini herself received many votes from people who preferred her.
In March 2005, a local court temporarily stopped Mussolini from running in regional elections. This was due to issues with signatures. Mussolini protested this decision. However, Italy's top court, the Council of State, later allowed her to run.
In November 2007, some comments by Mussolini caused a political group in the European Parliament to break apart. She said that all Romanians were criminals when talking about immigration. This led members from the Greater Romania Party to leave the group. This made the group too small to be an official caucus and get funding. In the 2019 European Parliament election, she was not re-elected to the European Parliament.
End and Return to Politics
She left the Forza Italia party in 2018. This was because the party decided to be against the Conte government. She has used social media to defend her grandfather's memory from critics.
In December 2020, she decided to leave politics for a while. She started a new career in television. She appeared as a contestant on popular shows like Ballando con le stelle and Tale e quale show. She was very successful on these shows.
In November 2022, Mussolini returned to politics. She became a Forza Italia MEP again. She replaced Antonio Tajani after he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies.
