Alessandra Mussolini (born December 30, 1962) is an Italian politician, television personality, and former actress, model, and singer. She has served in both the Italian Parliament and the European Parliament. She is the granddaughter of Benito Mussolini, who was the leader of Italy from 1922 to 1943.
Before entering politics, Mussolini was known for her work in acting and modeling. In 1982, she released a pop music album in Japan called Amore. She acted in her last movie in 1990 and decided to leave the film industry to focus on her studies.
In 2004, she became the first woman to lead a political party in Italy when she started the Social Action party. She was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 2008 to 2013 and the Italian Senate from 2013 to 2014. She was later elected to the European Parliament in 2014.
Mussolini took a break from politics in 2020 to appear on reality television shows. She returned to the European Parliament in November 2022.

Early Life and Family
Alessandra Mussolini was born in Rome, Italy. Her father was Romano Mussolini, the son of Benito Mussolini. Her mother is Maria Scicolone. The famous actress Sophia Loren is her maternal aunt. She also has a half-sister, Rachele Mussolini, who is also a politician.
From 1976 to 1980, she attended the American Overseas School of Rome. She later went to Sapienza University of Rome and graduated in 1994 with a degree in medicine and surgery.
On October 28, 1989, she married Mauro Floriani, a customs policeman. They have three children: Caterina, Clarissa, and Romano. The children later took their mother's last name. Mussolini has supported changing Italian law to allow all children to use their mother's last name if they choose.
Entertainment Career
Acting and Modeling
Encouraged by her aunt Sophia Loren, Mussolini began her career as an actress in the 1970s. She had a small role in the 1977 film A Special Day, which won a Golden Globe Award.
During the 1980s, she also worked as a model and appeared on the covers of several European magazines.
Mussolini continued to act throughout the 1980s, appearing in both television shows and movies. In the film The Assisi Underground, she played a nun helping to save Italian Jews during World War II. She left acting in 1990 to continue her studies after a producer asked her to change her famous last name.
Music Career
In 1982, Mussolini released a pop album called Amore. It was only sold in Japan and is now a rare item for collectors.
Political Career
Working in the Italian Parliament
In 1992, Mussolini was elected to the Italian parliament as a member of the Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI). After the 2008 elections, she served in parliament as part of Silvio Berlusconi's political group, The People of Freedom.
In 2013, she was elected to the Senate. The People of Freedom party later became a new version of Forza Italia. In 2014, she was elected to the European Parliament representing Forza Italia.
Running for Mayor
In 1993, Mussolini ran for mayor of Naples but was not elected. During this time, she had disagreements with Gianfranco Fini, the leader of her political party, the Alleanza Nazionale.
Starting Her Own Party
Mussolini left the National Alliance party in November 2003. This happened after the party's leader, Gianfranco Fini, made comments about history during a visit to Israel that she disagreed with.
After leaving, Mussolini started her own political party called Social Action. This made her the first woman to lead a political party in Italy. Many people were surprised by this move because she had progressive views on many issues.
Serving in the European Parliament
In the 2004 European Parliament election, Mussolini's new political group, Social Alternative, won 1.2% of the vote, and she was elected.
In November 2007, a political group she was part of in the European Parliament fell apart. This happened after she made comments about Romanian immigrants that caused members from the Greater Romania Party to leave the group.
She lost her seat in the 2019 European Parliament election.
Break from Politics and Return
Mussolini left the Forza Italia party in 2018. She has used social media to defend her grandfather's memory from critics.
In December 2020, she took a break from politics to focus on a new career in television. She competed on the Italian TV shows Ballando con le stelle (Dancing with the Stars) and Tale e quale show (a celebrity singing competition).
In November 2022, Mussolini returned to politics. She took over Antonio Tajani's seat in the European Parliament after he was elected to Italy's Chamber of Deputies.
