Ronald Michael Behagen, born on January 14, 1951, is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played as a power forward and center during his career.

Early Life and College Basketball

Ron Behagen grew up in New York City, New York. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx. After high school, he continued his basketball journey.

Playing for the Minnesota Golden Gophers

Behagen played college basketball at the University of Minnesota from 1971 to 1973. He was a tall player, standing 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall. During his time at Minnesota, he played alongside Dave Winfield. Winfield later became a famous player in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1973, Behagen was recognized for his skills. He was named a Third-team All-American. He also earned First-team All-Big Ten honors.

A Challenging College Moment

On January 25, 1972, during a game against Ohio State University, a serious incident occurred. This event led to Behagen and some teammates being suspended. The suspension meant they could not play for the rest of that season. This was a difficult time in his college career.

Professional Basketball Career

After college, Ron Behagen was chosen in the 1973 NBA draft by the Kansas City Kings. He was the 7th player picked in the first round. He also had an offer from the Kentucky Colonels in the American Basketball Association draft.

Playing in the NBA

Behagen played for seven seasons in the NBA. He was a member of several teams during his career. These teams included the Kansas City–Omaha Kings, New Orleans Jazz, and Atlanta Hawks. He also played for the Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets.

In his first year, he was recognized as one of the best new players. He received NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1974. Throughout his NBA career, he averaged about 10.3 points per game. He also grabbed around 7.0 rebounds per game.

Playing Overseas

Besides his time in the NBA, Behagen also played basketball in Italy. He played for a team called Antonini Siena. This gave him experience playing professional basketball outside of the United States.
