Ronald Maurice Wylie (born August 6, 1933, died April 14, 2020) was a Scottish football player, coach, and manager. He played as a midfielder or forward for teams like Notts County, Aston Villa, and Birmingham City. Ron played over 550 games in the Football League and more than 700 games in total! Later, he became a manager for West Bromwich Albion from 1982 to 1984.

Playing Football: Ron's Career

Ron Wylie started his football journey as a forward. He became well-known while playing for Notts County. In 1958, he moved to Aston Villa.

Success at Aston Villa

Ron spent seven years playing for Aston Villa. He was a key midfielder, helping his team win the Second Division title in the 1959–60 season. This win meant they were promoted to the top league, the First Division. A year later, in 1961, they also won the League Cup. Fans really liked Ron for his skills and hard work.

Even though he was a great player, Ron never played for the Scottish national team. This was probably because there were many other talented midfielders in Scotland at that time.

Moving to Birmingham City

In 1965, Ron moved to Birmingham City. Some people thought he was getting too old to play his best. However, he proved them wrong! He played almost 150 games for the club and became their captain. Ron retired from playing football in 1970 when he was 37 years old.

Ron Wylie: A Manager and Coach

After he stopped playing, Ron Wylie started a new career as a coach. He first joined the coaching staff at Aston Villa. Later, he moved to Coventry City, where he worked as a coach and then as an assistant manager.

Managing West Bromwich Albion

Ron also worked as an advisor in Cyprus for a short time. Then, in 1982, he returned to England to become the manager of West Bromwich Albion. The team had sold some of their best players before Ron arrived.

In the 1982–83 season, West Bromwich Albion started very well. They won 7 of their first 11 games and were hoping to qualify for the UEFA Cup. However, their performance dropped towards the end of the season, and they finished 11th. This was the last time the club finished in the top half of the top league until the 2011-12 season.

The next season, the team's performance was not as good. Ron Wylie left his manager position in February 1984.

Later Roles

After leaving West Bromwich Albion, Ron went back to Aston Villa. He managed their reserve team (a team of players who are not in the main squad). Later, he worked as a scout, looking for new talent. Finally, he rejoined Villa as a community liaison officer, helping the club connect with its fans and the local area. He retired from this role in 2002.

Ron's Family Life

Ron Wylie's grandson is Alex Grove. Alex played rugby union for Worcester Warriors and also for the Scottish national rugby team. Even though Alex was born in England, he could play for Scotland because his grandfather, Ron, was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ron Wylie passed away on April 14, 2020, after being ill for a long time.
