Ronan Colman Keane, born on 20 July 1932, is a retired Irish judge. He held very important positions in the Irish legal system. He was the Chief Justice of Ireland from 2000 to 2004. Before that, he served as a Judge in the Supreme Court from 1996 to 2004. His long career also included being a Judge of the High Court from 1979 to 1996.

Ronan Keane's Early Life and Education

Ronan Keane grew up in Dublin, Ireland. He went to Blackrock College for his schooling. After that, he studied at University College Dublin (UCD). In 1953, he earned a degree in Modern History.

Starting a Legal Career

After finishing college, Ronan Keane decided to become a lawyer. He was officially allowed to practice law in 1954. Later, in 1970, he became a Senior Counsel. This means he was a very experienced and respected lawyer.

Important Roles as a Judge

Ronan Keane became a High Court judge in July 1979. This was a big step in his career.

Leading Key Investigations

As a judge, he led important investigations. For example, in 1981, he was in charge of the special investigation into the Stardust fire. This was a very serious event. He also chaired the Law Reform Commission from 1987 to 1992. This group works to update and improve Ireland's laws.

Ronan Keane also helped other countries. He took part in programmes with the Council of Europe. These programmes helped countries in Europe develop their legal systems. He also wrote many books and papers about law.

Ronan Keane's Family Life

In 1962, Ronan Keane married Therese O'Donnell. She later became well-known as a journalist named Terry Keane. They had three children together. They also became close to Terry's daughter, who had been adopted. Ronan and Terry later separated but remained friends. Their daughter, Justine Keane, is married to Diarmuid Gavin. He is a famous Irish garden designer and TV personality.
