John Loyola Murray (born 27 June 1943 – died 18 January 2023) was an important Irish judge. He held several high-ranking legal jobs during his career. He was the Chief Justice of Ireland from 2004 to 2011. Before that, he was a judge in the Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice. He also served as the Attorney General of Ireland twice.

Early Life and Education
John Loyola Murray was born in Limerick, Ireland, on 27 June 1943. He went to school at Crescent College in Limerick and Rockwell College in County Tipperary.
He continued his studies at University College Dublin and the Honorable Society of King's Inns. This is where lawyers in Ireland get their training. He became a barrister in 1967. A barrister is a type of lawyer who represents people in court.
Serving as Attorney General
John Murray served as the Attorney General of Ireland two times. The Attorney General is the main legal advisor to the Irish government.
His first time in this role was from August to December 1982. He was appointed by the Taoiseach (Ireland's Prime Minister), Charles Haughey.
His second term as Attorney General lasted longer, from March 1987 to September 1991. In this job, he gave legal advice to the government on many important issues.
A Career in Judging
European Court of Justice
In 1991, John Murray became a judge at the European Court of Justice. This court helps make sure that European Union law is applied fairly in all EU countries. He worked there until 1999.
Irish Supreme Court
After his time in Europe, Murray returned to Ireland. In 1999, he was appointed as a judge to the Irish Supreme Court. This is the highest court in Ireland.
Chief Justice of Ireland
In 2004, John Murray was chosen to be the Chief Justice of Ireland. This is the most senior judge in the country. He led the Supreme Court and was in charge of the Irish justice system.
He retired from being Chief Justice in 2011. However, he continued to serve as a judge on the Supreme Court until 2015.

Family Life

John Murray passed away on 18 January 2023, at the age of 79.
