The Root River is a cool river found in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the beautiful Algoma District in the northeastern part of the province. This river starts its journey from a lake called Upper Island Lake. It then travels all the way to the St. Marys River, which is a very important waterway.

Exploring the Root River

The Root River is a smaller river, but it plays a part in the larger water system of the Great Lakes. It helps carry water from the land into the St. Marys River. This river connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

Where Does the River Start?

Every river has a beginning, and for the Root River, it's Upper Island Lake. This lake is located near a community also called Island Lake. From this point, the river starts its flow, heading south towards its final destination.

The River's Journey

After leaving Upper Island Lake, the Root River flows south. It runs alongside Ontario Highway 552 for a bit. This highway starts near another community called Heyden. The river then follows Ontario Highway 17 as it continues its path.

It passes through the Odena neighborhood, which is part of the city of Sault Ste. Marie. Finally, the Root River turns east and then southeast. It reaches its mouth at the St. Marys River. Here, it forms a small land area called Bells Point, which is a type of delta.

Other Streams Joining In

As the Root River travels, it gets water from smaller streams. These smaller streams are called tributaries. They flow into the main river, adding to its volume. The Root River has a few important tributaries:

  • Crystal Creek joins from the left side.
  • Coldwater Creek also joins from the left side.
  • The West Root River flows in from the right side.

These tributaries are like smaller branches feeding into the main river. They help keep the Root River flowing strong.
