Rosalie Sylvia Crutchley (born January 4, 1920 – died July 28, 1997) was a talented British actress. She was known for her strong performances on TV, in movies, and on stage. Rosalie started acting very young, making her first stage appearance in 1932. Her first movie role came in 1947.

She had striking dark eyes and often played interesting characters, sometimes from other countries or who seemed a bit mysterious. She also took on many classic roles. These included Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Hermione in The Winter's Tale, and Goneril in King Lear.

Rosalie Crutchley passed away in London in 1997.

Her Acting Career

Rosalie Crutchley was born in London on January 4, 1920. She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Music.

Her first movie role was in Take My Life (1947). She played a violinist who gets murdered. Rosalie was so good at playing Madame Defarge from the famous book A Tale of Two Cities that she played the character twice! She was in both the 1958 movie and the 1965 TV show based on the story.

She also played important historical figures. She was Catherine Parr, one of Henry VIII's wives, in the 1970 TV series The Six Wives of Henry VIII. She played Catherine Parr again in the show Elizabeth R (1971). Earlier, in 1953, she played Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, in the movie The Sword and the Rose.

Rosalie took on many other memorable roles. She was Mrs. Sparsit in the TV series Hard Times (1977). She also appeared in the 1979 BBC TV show Testament of Youth. In movies, she played Claudia Acte, the former girlfriend of Emperor Nero, in Quo Vadis (1951). She was also the spooky housekeeper Mrs. Dudley in The Haunting (1963).

She appeared in two movies based on books by A.J. Cronin: The Spanish Gardener (1956) and Beyond This Place (1959). She also had guest roles in the medical drama Casualty in 1992 and 1995. You might also remember her short but funny appearance in the popular movie Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994).

Rosalie Crutchley was in only one musical movie, Man of La Mancha (1972). She played Don Quixote's housekeeper. Her singing in this role was meant to be funny, and it certainly was!

Her very last acting job was in the first episode of the detective TV series Midsomer Murders. She played Lucy Bellringer. This episode aired in 1997, shortly before she passed away.

Her Family Life

Rosalie Crutchley was married two times. Her first marriage was to actor Dan Cunningham in 1939. Her second marriage was to actor Peter Ashmore in 1946. Both marriages ended in divorce. She had two children: a son named Jonathan Ashmore, who became a physicist, and a daughter named Catherine Ashmore, who became a photographer for the theater.
