Rosalie Mansion is a beautiful old house in Natchez, Mississippi. It was built in 1823, before the American Civil War. This grand home is now a historic house museum where people can visit and learn about the past.

Rosalie Mansion was very important for its time. It inspired the design of many other large homes in the area, especially those built in the Greek Revival style. During the Civil War, the mansion was used by the U.S. Army as a main headquarters for the Natchez region starting in July 1863. Because of its history and beauty, Rosalie Mansion was named a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

What Rosalie Mansion Looks Like

Rosalie Mansion is located southwest of downtown Natchez. It sits high up, looking over the Mississippi River. The house is a large, three-story brick building. It has a special roof that is flat on top with a low fence around it.

The front of the house has a grand porch with four large columns. This porch has a triangular top with a half-circle window in the middle. There are wide doors in the center that lead into the house on the first floor and to a balcony on the second floor. Both sets of doors have windows on the sides and a half-circle window above them. At the back of the house, there is another porch with five columns, but it has a flat roof.

History of Rosalie Mansion

Rosalie, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi
Rosalie, by Frances Benjamin Johnston, 1938

Rosalie Mansion was built in 1823 for Peter Little, a rich businessman who traded cotton. It was built on a high spot overlooking the Mississippi River. This land was once part of Fort Rosalie, where a historical event called the Natchez revolt happened in 1729.

Rosalie Mansion During the Civil War

A week after the Siege of Vicksburg, on July 13, 1863, U.S. Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant took over Rosalie Mansion. He used it as his main office for the army. Later, on August 26, 1863, General Walter Q. Gresham took charge of the U.S. troops in Natchez, and his headquarters also stayed at Rosalie.

General Gresham made sure that the owner's furniture was safely stored in the attic and guarded. This helped prevent anything from being stolen or broken. Many U.S. Army tents were set up around the mansion. Soldiers were even stationed in the widow's walk (a small platform) on top of the mansion to keep watch.

Visiting Rosalie Mansion Today

The Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution has owned and taken care of Rosalie Mansion for over seventy years. They operate it as a historic house museum. This means you can visit the mansion to see how people lived long ago and learn about its important history.

In 1989, Rosalie Mansion was officially recognized as a National Historic Landmark. This shows how important it is to the history of the United States.
