Rosalie Mansion is a beautiful old house in Natchez, Mississippi. It was built way back in 1823, before the American Civil War. This grand home helped inspire the design of many other large houses in the area. During the Civil War, it became an important army headquarters. Today, you can visit Rosalie Mansion as a historic house museum. It was recognized as a special National Historic Landmark in 1989.

What Rosalie Mansion Looks Like

Rosalie Mansion sits on a hill in Natchez, looking out over the mighty Mississippi River. It is a large, three-story brick building. The roof is flat on top, with a low fence around it.

Front of the House

The front of the mansion has a grand entrance. There are four tall columns that hold up a triangular roof section. In the middle of this triangle, you can see a half-oval window. The main doors are wide and have windows on the sides and a half-oval window above them. There's also a balcony on the second floor with similar doors.

Back of the House

The back of the mansion also has columns, five of them. They support a flat roof. This design makes Rosalie Mansion a great example of Greek Revival architecture.

Rosalie Mansion's History

Rosalie, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi
Rosalie Mansion in 1938

Rosalie Mansion was built for a rich cotton trader named Peter Little. He had it built in 1823 on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. This spot was once part of Fort Rosalie, where an important event called the Natchez revolt happened in 1729.

Rosalie During the Civil War

The mansion played a big role during the American Civil War. In July 1863, just a week after the Siege of Vicksburg, a famous general named Ulysses S. Grant took over the mansion. He used it as his army's main office.

Later, in August 1863, General Walter Q. Gresham took command of the U.S. troops in Natchez. He also used Rosalie as his headquarters. General Gresham made sure the owner's furniture was safely stored in the attic. He even had guards protect it from being stolen or damaged. Many army tents were set up around the mansion. Soldiers also stood watch from the "widow's walk" on top of the house.

Visiting Rosalie Mansion Today

Today, Rosalie Mansion is a historic house museum. This means you can visit it to learn about its past and see how people lived long ago. The Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution has owned and taken care of the mansion for over seventy years. They work hard to keep it open for visitors.

Rosalie Mansion was named a National Historic Landmark in 1989. This special title means it is a very important place in American history.
