Rosalind Chao, born on September 23, 1957, is an American actress. She is known for her roles in many TV shows and movies. You might recognize her as Soon-Lee Klinger from the 1980s show AfterMASH. She also played Rose Hsu Jordan in the 1993 movie The Joy Luck Club.
Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will know her as the character Keiko O'Brien. In 2003, she appeared as Dr. Kim on The O.C.. More recently, she played Hua Li, who is Mulan's mother, in the live-action 2020 movie Mulan. In 2024, she starred as Ye Wenjie in the Netflix series 3 Body Problem.
Early Life and Education
Rosalind Chao was born in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in Anaheim, which is close to Disneyland. Her parents were performers in the Peking opera before they moved to Anaheim. There, they opened a popular restaurant called Chao's Chinese and American Restaurant. It was right across the street from Disneyland. Rosalind helped out at the restaurant from a young age.
She went to Pomona College and then the University of Southern California. She earned a degree in broadcast journalism in 1978. For a while, she worked at Disneyland as a guide for international visitors. She even thought about becoming a journalist.
Acting Career Highlights
Rosalind's parents played a big part in her decision to become an actress. She started acting when she was just five years old. She performed with her parents' Peking opera group, which traveled around California. During summer breaks, her parents sent her to Taiwan to learn more about acting.
When she was a child, she appeared in a 1970 episode of Here's Lucy. She played the daughter of a laundry owner in that show.
Even after studying journalism, Rosalind decided to return to acting. Her first big role was as Soon-Lee in the last episodes of the TV series M*A*S*H. Soon-Lee married the character Maxwell Klinger in the show's final episode, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". This episode aired on February 28, 1983. It was one of the most-watched TV episodes ever in the U.S. Rosalind played Soon-Lee again in the show's follow-up series, AfterMASH.
Rosalind also played Keiko O'Brien, an exo-botanist, in the Star Trek universe. She was in both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In August 2018, Rosalind was chosen to play Mulan's mother, Hua Li, in the 2020 live-action movie Mulan. In 2019, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is a group that decides who wins the Oscars. She was recognized for her work in movies like The Joy Luck Club and I Am Sam.
Personal Life
Rosalind Chao met her husband, Simon Templeman, while they were working in theater. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
