Rosario del Pilar Fernández Figueroa (born 1955) is a Peruvian politician. She has held important roles in the Peruvian government. She served as the Prime Minister of Peru and also as the Minister of Justice.

Who is Rosario Fernández?

Rosario Fernández was born in Lima, Peru, in 1955. Her father, Joffré Fernández Valdivieso, was also a well-known lawyer and politician. He served as a Minister of Justice from 1985 to 1990.

Her Education and Early Career

Rosario Fernández studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. She was a top student, graduating first in her class in 1977. She continued her studies in Washington, D.C., learning more about different areas of law. These included civil law, family law, and international law.

From 1988 to 1991, she was the vice chairman of the Lima Stock Exchange. This is a place where people buy and sell parts of companies. She also served as Treasurer for the Lima Bar Association from 1993 to 1994. During these years, she took on various roles in the Peruvian government. She helped oversee investments in energy and protected the rights of small shareholders in companies.

Her Time as Justice Minister

In 2007, Rosario Fernández became the Minister of Justice. This role involves making sure laws are fair and followed. She held this position until 2009.

She returned to politics in 2010, again becoming the Minister of Justice. She took over after some changes in government laws.

Becoming Prime Minister

In March 2011, Rosario Fernández was chosen to lead the Cabinet of Ministers. This made her the Prime Minister of Peru. She served in this high-ranking position until July of the same year.

Rosario Fernández is married to a lawyer named Ernest Coz. They have two daughters.
