Historic Saline District Courthouse

Rose is well-known because of the historic Saline District Courthouse. This important building is about 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of Rose. It is the last courthouse still owned by the Cherokee Nation. The courthouse was built in 1884 on a large piece of land, about 14 acres (5.7 hectares).

The Cherokee Nation has made this courthouse its first national park. The building stopped being a courthouse when the Curtis Act ended the tribal government before Oklahoma became a state in 1907. The building was then sold and became a private home until 1970. The owner sold it to the state, which later sold it back to the Cherokee Nation.

Restoring the Courthouse

Even though the state had agreed to take care of the building, it did not. In 2003, a group called Preservation Oklahoma, Inc. said the Saline District Courthouse was one of "...Oklahoma's most endangered historic properties." The Cherokee Nation started fixing up the site in 2008. This included the grounds and a spring house.

The main building had old paint that contained lead. Because of this, the restoration project received special grants. It got $104,000 from the EPA Brownfields program and an extra $45,000 to finish the cleanup. In June 2011, the Oklahoma State Historical Society gave an award to the Cherokee Nation for their hard work. The courthouse was still being renovated in 2019.

The courthouse is actually located in Delaware County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) with the number 76001561. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
