The rose-collared piha (Lipaugus streptophorus) is a special kind of bird. It is part of the Cotingidae family. You can find this bird in humid forests. These forests grow in the high tepui mountains. They are located in south-eastern Venezuela, western Guyana, and northern Brazil. Only the male bird has the bright rosy collar. This collar gives the bird its name. The female looks a bit like the screaming piha. However, she has a cinnamon-colored area near her tail.

What Does the Rose-collared Piha Look Like?

The adult male rose-collared piha has dark grey feathers on its back. Its belly is a lighter grey. Around its neck, there is a wide, bright magenta collar. It also has a similar colorful patch near its tail.

The female bird looks like the male. But she does not have the magenta collar. Her tail area is a rusty-brown color instead. This bird grows to be about 22.5 centimeters (9 inches) long.

It's easy to spot the male piha because of its unique collar. But the female might be confused with the female screaming piha (Lipaugus vociferans). The screaming piha is all grey. It does not have the rusty-brown area near its tail. The calls of these birds are also very different. The male rose-collared piha sometimes makes a loud, sharp "skreeéyr" sound.

Where Do Rose-collared Pihas Live?

The rose-collared piha lives in a small area. It can be found in humid forests in Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil. These birds usually stay in the middle or upper parts of the forest trees. Sometimes, you might see them at the edge of the forest. They also appear in clearings or open areas with trees spread out.

You might see them alone or in pairs. They mostly eat fruit. They especially like fruit from Melastomataceae plants. They pick the fruit while flying.

Is the Rose-collared Piha Endangered?

The Lipaugus streptophorus lives in a somewhat small area. But it is quite common within that area. The number of these birds seems to be stable. Experts have not found any major threats to them. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the bird as "least concern". This means it is not currently at risk of disappearing.
