Rose Lake is a beautiful lake located right on the border. It sits between Cook County in Minnesota, USA, and the province of Ontario, Canada. It's a special place known for its natural beauty and history.

About Rose Lake's Location

Rose Lake is quite large, covering about 1,315 acres. That's like more than 990 football fields! It's also pretty deep, reaching down to 90 feet in some spots. The lake is nestled in an area called the Rove Formation. This area has long, rocky ridges that run from east to west. These ridges have gentle slopes on one side and steep cliffs on the other.

One of these ridges, just south of Rose Lake, rises 300 feet above the water. There's even a peak called Rose Lake Mountain nearby. Rose Lake itself sits at 1,528 feet above sea level. It's the lowest lake in this area, so water from other nearby lakes like Duncan Lake and Watap Lake flows into it. From Rose Lake, the water then flows into the Arrow River. This river eventually joins the Pigeon River, which finally empties into the huge Lake Superior.

Animals and Plants of Rose Lake

Rose Lake is home to many different kinds of fish. You might find Walleye, Lake Trout, and Smallmouth Bass swimming in its waters. Other fish living here include Cisco, Lake Whitefish, and Yellow Perch.

The forest around Rose Lake is mostly filled with tall white pines and cedars. These trees provide a great home for many animals and make the area very scenic.

How People Use Rose Lake

Rose Lake has an interesting history with people. Back in the 1920s, a company called General Logging Company used the lake for logging. They extended a railroad all the way to the lake's eastern shore to help move timber. However, logging stopped soon after because of a big forest fire in 1929 and the start of the Great Depression.

In 1936, another forest fire started in Ontario and crossed the border at the lake. Firefighters from the Superior National Forest worked hard to stop it.

Today, Rose Lake is part of a special protected area. On the U.S. side, it's in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). On the Canadian side, it's Crownland. These areas limit how people can access the lake to protect its natural state. You can reach Rose Lake by canoe, often by carrying your canoe over a short path from Duncan Lake. You can also hike to it using trails like the Border Route Trail or Caribou Rock Trail. It's a popular spot for canoeing, fishing, and enjoying nature.
