The Rose is a cool theatre in downtown Brampton, Ontario. It is owned by the city. It was first called Rose Theatre Brampton. The theatre officially opened in September 2006. A famous singer named Diana Krall performed at the grand opening.

The Rose has a big main hall that can seat 880 people. It also has a smaller hall. This smaller hall can hold 130 to 160 people. The number of seats changes depending on how it is set up.

The theatre was built to bring more visitors to Brampton. It helps local restaurants, shops, and other businesses. City planners thought it would bring in a lot of money. They also believed it would create many jobs.

The Rose is also home to the Rose Theatre Summer Series. This is a special festival of plays and shows. These shows happen in the summer. They are performed in three different places. These places are the Main Stage, Studio Two, and Garden Square.

The Rose Theatre's Story

Building the Theatre

Work on an underground parking garage started in 1994. This was built by a company called Inzola Construction. The local Farmers Market had to move during this time. It moved to Main Street in 1995. The parking garage was finished in 1997. It was named Market Square Parking.

For several years, nothing was built on top of the parking lot. There were ideas to build a tall apartment building. But engineers found the ground was not strong enough. A movie theatre was also suggested, but that idea was not chosen.

On April 15, 2002, the City Council decided to build a new theatre. It would be in the downtown area. The project was first called "Market Square Theatre."

Opening The Rose

The Market Theatre was designed by Page + Steele Architects. It was built by Aecon Buildings. It opened in September 2006. The theatre was named the Rose Theatre Brampton. It also included an outdoor public space called Garden Square. Over time, people in Brampton started calling it "The Rose."

In 2008, the area around the theatre was updated. A special fountain stage was added. This made Garden Square even better.

The Rose has hosted many exciting events. In 2011, it was the last stop for the North American tour of The Wizard of Oz. In March 2016, a famous comedian named Howie Mandel performed there.

Sometimes, the theatre had problems with its electricity. In 2011, it had to use generators for power. This was because of issues with the electrical system. Some shows were cancelled, but others continued. The theatre worked hard to fix these problems quickly.
