Rosebery is a suburb located in the southern part of Palmerston, a city in Australia's Northern Territory. It's about 26 kilometers (around 16 miles) southeast of Darwin city center. Rosebery is managed by the City of Palmerston, which is its local government area.
How Rosebery Got Its Name
Rosebery is named after a very important person from history: Archibald Philip Primrose. He was the Fifth Earl of Rosebery and a famous British statesman. In 1884, he visited South Australia.
Just ten years later, Archibald Philip Primrose became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. During his visit to Australia, the South Australian Government decided to name new areas in the "Top End" (the northern part of the Northern Territory).
In 1885, a large area called the County of Rosebery was officially created. This county covered the land north of Pine Creek. Later, the County of Rosebery was no longer used and was officially cancelled in 1977.
However, the Place Names Committee and the Palmerston Development Authority wanted to keep the name "Rosebery" alive. So, they decided to use it for this new suburb.
