Rosedale's Past

Rosedale is located northeast of the city of Baltimore. It used to be a farming area for a long time. This changed after World War II when more houses and buildings were built.

How Rosedale Got Its Name

No one is completely sure how Rosedale got its name. But in 1950, a group of fourth graders asked their families about the community's history. They found a story that might explain it.

The story says there was a young Englishman named Dale. He had a farm on Hamilton Avenue, close to Philadelphia Road. This farm was famous for its many beautiful roses. Because of Mr. Dale and his lovely roses, people thought "Rosedale" would be a perfect name for the area.

Early Settlers and Growth

Many people from Germany and Poland came to settle in Rosedale in the late 1800s. They were often farmers. One family, the Schatzschneiders, shared their story in 1940.

Charles Schatzschneider was born in Germany in 1859. He came to Rosedale when he was 13 to work on farms. He and his wife had 15 children. They saw Rosedale change a lot. It went from being a wild area to a developed community. They got gas and electric lights, water systems, and paved streets. They were amazed by the new electric trains that passed their farm.

When they first arrived, large ships called schooners could sail up Back River. But by 1940, it was hard for even a rowboat to get through.

The first school in Rosedale was a small wooden building with two rooms. It was located at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Philadelphia Road. By 1950, this old school building was being used as a fire station and a community hall.

Rosedale kept growing as a place for people to live starting in the 1950s. Most of the homes that existed in 1990 were built between 1854 and 1979.
