Roselands Shopping Centre is easy to reach by bus. Buses connect it to many parts of Sydney, like Greater Western Sydney, Inner West, and the St George area. Most buses stop right outside the centre on Roseland Avenue.
If you prefer to drive, Roselands has many parking spots. There are 3,187 spaces spread across different levels. While there isn't a train station in Roselands itself, the closest ones are at Punchbowl or Narwee.
History of Roselands
Building the Centre
Work on Roselands Shopping Centre started on 9 June 1964. It was built on what used to be the Roselands Golf Course. The name "Roselands" came from an old house and rose garden that were there before. Building the centre cost about A$15 million at the time.
The centre was designed by Whitehead & Payne and developed by a company called Grace Bros.
Grand Opening and Early Features
Roselands officially opened its doors on 12 October 1965. The premier of New South Wales, Robert Askin, was there for the big event. When it opened, Roselands was the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere! However, it only held this title for less than a year. Bankstown Central opened soon after and became even bigger.
When it first opened, Roselands had a large, four-level Grace Bros department store. It also had a Coles Variety Store, a Coles New World supermarket, and a cinema called Roselands Theatre Beautiful. There were 87 other smaller shops too.
Roselands was famous for a few cool things:
- It had Australia's very first "food court," called "Four Corners." It was designed to look like food from different parts of the world.
- There was a special "Raindrop Fountain" and a "rose fountain."
- On the rooftop, there was an entertainment area called The Carnival Top, with a bandstand and even a mini-golf course!
The 1969 Fire
On 13 June 1969, a big fire broke out in the Grace Bros store. It started on the top floor, which was used for storage. The fire caused a lot of damage, mainly from water used to put it out. The top floor was completely destroyed, and the floors below were badly damaged by water. Luckily, the fire was contained and put out.
Changes and Updates
Over the years, Roselands has changed and grown a lot.
- In 1981, a big expansion added more parking and moved the food area. The centre then had 122 stores.
- The Roselands Theatre Beautiful cinema closed in 1985. Later, a store called JB Hi-Fi opened in that space.
- In 1986, Target opened a new-look store where the Coles Variety Store used to be.
- More updates happened between 1991 and 1992, adding new supermarkets and changing the layout.
- In 1998, the centre got new owners and was renamed Centro Roselands in 2004.
- Another big refurbishment in 1999 added a new food court, new skylights, and more shops. The old Raindrop and Rose fountains were removed to make space.
- In 2014, the centre went back to its original name, Roselands.
Recent Upgrades
Roselands has continued to get modern makeovers.
- In 2018, a $90 million redevelopment began. This project focused on creating new supermarkets and a fresh food area.
- This big upgrade opened on 26 September 2019. It included a new Aldi store and a completely updated Coles.
- A new, full-size Woolworths also opened on 30 October 2019.
- In 2021, a company called JY Group bought a 50% share of the centre.
