Where is Roselawn?

Roselawn can be found at 244 Cherokee Avenue in Cartersville, Georgia. This city is located in Bartow County, Georgia, in the United States.

A Look Back: Roselawn's Story

The story of Roselawn began in the 1860s. A local businessman named Nelson Gilreath built the first version of the house. It started as a one-story home with an attic. By 1872, the attic was changed to create more bedrooms.

Samuel Porter Jones's Home

In the 1880s, a famous Christian speaker named Samuel Porter Jones bought the house. He was known for leading large religious meetings called revivals. Jones made the house much bigger. He added two more stories to the back of the house. By 1895, he had added a third floor and even a basement!

After Samuel Porter Jones passed away in 1906, his wife, Laura McElwain Jones, continued to live there. She stayed in the mansion until the 1920s.

New Owners and a Museum

In the 1930s, Guy Parmenter and his wife, Marie Cole Bell Parmenter, bought Roselawn. They added a modern touch to the old house by installing an elevator. The Parmenters lived in the mansion until 1968. After they moved out, the house was empty for about ten years.

In 1978, Bartow County bought Roselawn. They decided to turn the historic house into a museum. The museum tells the story of Samuel Porter Jones. It also shares information about another famous person from Cartersville, Rebecca Latimer Felton. Even though she didn't live at Roselawn, she was an important figure in the area's history.
