Roslyn is a small community in Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is not a separate city but part of a larger township. The area was first called Hillside. Its current name, Roslyn, comes from the beautiful rose gardens that once grew there.
As of the 2020 United States census, about 9,525 people live in Roslyn.
History of Roslyn
The first person of European background known to live in this area was John Tyson. He bought land here in 1717. John Tyson built special ovens called lime kilns. These kilns used heat to turn the local limestone into a material called quicklime. Quicklime was used in building and farming. This industry continued in Roslyn until the late 1900s.
Getting Around Roslyn
The first train line came to Roslyn in 1872. It was built by the North East Pennsylvania Railroad. Today, you can use the Roslyn train station to travel. This station was built in the late 1970s. It is part of SEPTA's Warminster Line, which helps people get around the greater Philadelphia area. The train station is located where Susquehanna Road and Easton Road meet.
Schools in Roslyn
Roslyn is home to Roslyn Elementary School. This is one of seven public elementary schools in the Abington School District. There was also a private Catholic school called St. John of the Cross Elementary. It closed in 2010 and joined with another school to form Good Shepherd Catholic Regional Elementary School.
