Rossmoor is a special neighborhood in Walnut Creek, California. It's a gated community, which means it has controlled entrances. About 9,200 people live here. Rossmoor was one of the first places in the San Francisco Bay Area designed for adults aged 55 and older. It's a community where older adults can live actively.
How Rossmoor Started
In the 1930s, a man named Stanley Dollar built a large estate. It was in the Tice Creek Valley near Walnut Creek. His family raised Hereford cattle and show horses there. The estate grew from about 1,436 acres to 2,200 acres.
In 1960, Stanley Dollar's son, R. Stanley Dollar Jr., sold the land. He sold it to Ross W. Cortese, who owned the Rossmoor Corporation. Mr. Cortese had already built another community named Rossmoor in Orange County. He first planned to call this new community "Leisure World." But he changed his mind soon after starting construction. The name "Leisure World" is still used by his family. However, it has not been used for Rossmoor in Walnut Creek for many years.
What Rossmoor is Like Today

Rossmoor Walnut Creek is a community for older adults. It is located in the Tice Valley area of Walnut Creek, California. The community covers about 1,800 acres. It is about two miles (3 km) from downtown Walnut Creek. It is also about 25 miles (40 km) from downtown San Francisco.
Building the community began in 1963. Today, there are about 6,700 homes here. These homes are in different types of neighborhoods. Some are cooperatives, others are condominiums, and some are single-family homes. Many homes are duplexes or four-plexes. These are like two or four homes joined together. There are also mid-rise and high-rise buildings. A small area has 63 individual single-family homes.
The prices of homes can vary a lot. Some cooperative homes might be in the mid-$200,000s. Single-family homes and garden-style condominiums can cost over $1 million. To live in Rossmoor, at least one person in the home must be 55 years old or older.
Fun Things to Do
Rossmoor has many great things for residents to enjoy. There are two golf courses. One has nine holes, and the other has 18 holes. There is a large indoor swimming pool and a fitness center. You can also find two outdoor pools. For sports, there are six tennis courts. Residents can play lawn bowling and bocce ball. There are also hiking trails and places for table tennis.
How Rossmoor is Managed
Rossmoor is managed by a group called the Golden Rain Foundation. This is a nonprofit organization. It has nine directors who help run the community. Each director is chosen from a different area within Rossmoor. They serve for three years. No director can serve for more than two terms.
