History of Rossville
The land where Rossville now stands was once home to the Miami Indians. The very first settlers from other places arrived in 1828.
In 1832, a man named Thomas Ewing, along with his wife and baby, settled on land north of what is now Main Street. Two years later, in 1834, Ewing and Thomas Smith planned out the town of Rossville. They wanted to start a blacksmith shop there.
The town slowly grew. It soon had a store run by William Seawright. There was also a saddler, John H. Smith, who made things from leather. Dr. James Wilson, a doctor, also moved to the town. People who live in Rossville are sometimes called "Rossvillians."
On October 22, 1870, the town asked to become an official, organized town. At that time, 339 people lived in Rossville, making up 66 families. An election was held on November 5, and the idea passed with 35 votes for and 19 against. On December 1, 1870, Rossville officially became an incorporated town. The town was named after John Ross, who was an early settler and a judge in the county.
The Monon Railroad was built through Rossville in 1883. This helped the town connect with other places.
