Geography and Nature
Round Mountain is located at 40°47′59″N 121°56′35″W / 40.79972°N 121.94306°W. It covers about 1.7 square miles (4.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a tiny bit of water.
This area is important to the Achomawi and Atsugewi people, also known as the "Pit River" First Nation. They have never signed a treaty with the U.S. government. They continue to work hard to protect their land and traditions.
Round Mountain is home to the Hill Country Health and Wellness Center. This clinic is known for being very well-run. It also has special "LEEDS" certificates for its eco-friendly buildings. The center has a large facility just for young people.
Some farmers in Round Mountain grow organic food. They are part of the Shasta Regional Seed Cooperative. They work together to grow many types of old-fashioned food crops. They also use special farming methods that help the environment.
Many people in Round Mountain live "off the grid." This means they make their own electricity. They use power from water, the sun, and wind. These residents also help keep their community safe. They work on projects to make the area more sustainable.
There is a large electrical substation nearby. Big power lines run through the town. These lines are part of a system that carries electricity.
In 2009, a plan for a second substation and new power lines was stopped. This project, called TANC, would have cost a lot of money. Citizens worked together to show that the project was not needed. They stopped the plan in about 90 days.
Cedar Creek Elementary School is not open right now. Most students from Round Mountain go to schools in Montgomery Creek. The Round Mountain Community Center is run by local groups. It can hold about 200 people for events.
The land in Round Mountain can sometimes be unstable. Landslides have destroyed homes, a store, and a nightclub. Power lines in the area often need repairs because the ground moves. After a big fire and the building of power lines, landslides became more common. A road repair project in 2009 also saw major ground movement after it was finished.
