Exploring Roxboro's Geography
This section looks at the land and natural features of Roxboro.
Roxboro Island: A Local Landmark
In 1974, the city of Roxboro bought a small island. This island is known as Lot 311 and is located at the north end of 5th Avenue North. It is one of many islands in the Hochelaga Archipelago.
The Canadian and Quebec governments officially named the island on April 12, 1991. Today, the island has a bridge, lights for nighttime, and places to dispose of garbage.
Roxboro Woods: A Protected Area
"Boisé de Roxboro" is a special area of protected woodland. It was officially named on August 22, 2001. Even though it's protected, this woodland area has become smaller over time. This is mainly due to new buildings and developments.
How Roxboro Joined Montreal
For many years, the city of Montreal wanted to combine with smaller nearby cities like Roxboro.
The Big Merger of 2002
On January 1, 2002, Roxboro officially merged with Dollard-des-Ormeaux. Together, they became a new part, or "borough," of the city of Montreal.
The 2004 Vote to Separate
After the merger, a special vote was held on June 20, 2004. This vote allowed residents to decide if they wanted their former cities to separate from Montreal again. In Roxboro, 67% of the people who voted wanted to leave Montreal. There were 1,497 "Yes" votes and 732 "No" votes.
However, the province of Quebec had a rule: at least 35% of all eligible voters had to participate for the vote to count. Even though most people who voted wanted to leave, not enough people participated overall. Because of this, Roxboro remained part of Montreal.
Forming Pierrefonds-Roxboro Borough
The former city of Pierrefonds, which was next to Roxboro, voted to stay part of Montreal. So, Roxboro and Pierrefonds joined together to form the new borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro. This new borough officially began on January 1, 2006. Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Roxboro's former partner, did vote to separate and became an independent city again at that time.
