What is a Constituency?
A constituency is like a special area or district that votes for one person to represent them in Parliament. The boundaries, or borders, of these areas can change over time.
Where Was Roxburgh and Berwickshire?
The Roxburgh and Berwickshire constituency was located in the Borders region of Scotland. It included the areas known as Roxburgh District and Berwickshire District.
How the Boundaries Changed
When it was first created in 1983, the constituency covered the Roxburgh and Berwickshire districts. These districts were set up in 1975. Before this, the areas were part of older constituencies like Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles and Berwick and East Lothian.
In 1997, a small part of the Ettrick and Lauderdale District was added to the constituency. This was done after a review of how the areas were divided for elections.
In 1996, the way local government worked in Scotland changed. The old regions and districts were replaced by new council areas. The Scottish Borders council area was created, covering the same area as the old Borders region.
When the Constituency Ended
The Roxburgh and Berwickshire constituency was stopped in 2005. A new constituency called Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk was created in its place. This new area covers parts of the old constituency and other nearby areas.
Who Represented the Area?
The person elected to represent a constituency in the UK Parliament is called a Member of Parliament (MP). They speak for the people in their area and help make laws.
