History of Roxie
Roxie was started in 1886. A man named John Quincy Adams Graves gave some of his farmland for the town. He was a local leader and had served in the Civil War. The town was named after his new baby daughter, Roxie.
Becoming an Official Town
Roxie officially became a town in 1890. This meant it had its own local government.
Railroads and Early Jobs
The town was built where two important railroads crossed. These were the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. Because of the railroads, many early residents worked for them. Others worked in the logging industry, cutting down trees, and at sawmills, which turned logs into lumber.
Roxie School Days
Children in Roxie went to the Roxie School. Its motto was Home of the Tigers. In 1962, the high school part of the school closed. Older students (grades 9-12) then took buses to the new Franklin High School in Meadville. Roxie School continued for a few more years as an elementary school for younger children.
