Roy Dewalt was a talented Canadian Football League (CFL) quarterback. He was born on September 4, 1956. Roy played football for nine years. He spent most of his career with the BC Lions from 1980 to 1987. Later, he also played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ottawa Rough Riders in 1988. Roy Dewalt helped the BC Lions win their second ever Grey Cup championship in 1985. He was even named the Most Valuable Player for offense in that championship game!

Playing Professional Football

Roy Dewalt joined the BC Lions in 1980. Before that, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. He played college football at Texas-Arlington. When he first joined the Lions, Roy was a backup quarterback. He learned a lot from the starting quarterback, Joe Paopao.

Becoming a Starting Quarterback

In 1982, Roy Dewalt became the main quarterback for the BC Lions. This was also when a great player named Mervyn Fernandez joined the team. Mervyn became Roy's favorite player to throw the ball to.

The next year, in 1983, Roy helped his team have an amazing season. The Lions finished first in their division. They had 11 wins and only 5 losses. This success led them to the Grey Cup championship game. It was their first Grey Cup appearance since 1964! However, they lost a very close game to the Toronto Argonauts, 18 to 17.

Winning the Grey Cup

In 1984, the Lions had another strong season. They won 12 games and lost only 3. But they lost the Western championship game. This meant they didn't get to play in the Grey Cup that year.

However, in 1985, the BC Lions came back even stronger! They had an incredible record of 13 wins and 3 losses. They finished first in the West again. This time, they made it to the Grey Cup and won! They defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with a score of 37 to 24. It was a huge victory for the team and for Roy Dewalt.

During that 1985 season, Roy Dewalt had his best year. He threw for 4,237 yards and scored 27 touchdowns. Even with these great numbers, he wasn't chosen as the best quarterback in his division that year. That honor went to Matt Dunigan from the Edmonton Eskimos.

Later Career and Retirement

After the 1985 championship, Roy Dewalt's next two seasons were not as strong. This was partly because Mervyn Fernandez got injured in 1985. Then, Mervyn left the Lions to play for another team in 1986.

In 1988, the BC Lions brought in a new quarterback, Matt Dunigan. So, Roy Dewalt signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He faced some challenges there, including an arm injury. Later that same year, he moved to play for the Ottawa Rough Riders. His play didn't improve much with the Rough Riders. After that season, Roy Dewalt decided to retire from professional football.
