Roy Michael Harrison (born 14 October 1948) is a British scientist who studies the environment. He is a professor at the University of Birmingham in the UK. He also works as a professor at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Early Life and Education

Roy Harrison was born on October 14, 1948. He went to Henley Grammar School. Later, he studied at the University of Birmingham. He earned a degree in chemistry in 1969. He then got his PhD in 1972. In 1989, he earned another special degree in environmental chemistry. This shows he studied how chemicals affect our environment.

What Roy Harrison Studies

Roy Harrison is an expert on air pollution. He focuses on tiny bits in the air called particulates and nanoparticles. These are very small pieces of stuff that float around. His work looks at where these particles come from. He also studies how they change in the air. Most importantly, he researches how they affect people's health.

Air Pollution from Vehicles

A big part of his work is about pollution from vehicles. He studies the tiny particles that come out of car and truck exhausts. His research helps us understand what these particles are made of. It also shows how they spread near roads. This knowledge helps us know how vehicle pollution affects the air we breathe.

Helping Big Cities Breathe Easier

Professor Harrison has led important projects. One big project looked at diesel exhaust particles. He also works with other scientists on studies in big cities. For example, he helps with projects to improve air quality in Beijing and Delhi. These cities often have a lot of air pollution.

Awards and Special Recognition

Roy Harrison's important work has earned him many awards. He received the John Jeyes Medal. This award is from the Royal Society of Chemistry. He also got the Fitzroy Prize from the Royal Meteorological Society.

He has also helped the government for many years. He was a member of committees that advise on environmental science. These committees help make rules about air quality and health. In 2004, he was given the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This was for his great work in environmental science. In 2017, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK.

About His Life

Roy Harrison married Angela Copeman in 1981. They later divorced. He then married Susan Stuart in 1989. He has three children. Outside of his science work, he enjoys outdoor activities. He likes "mowing and other outdoor pursuits."
