Sir John Roy Sambles (born in 1945) is a famous English experimental physicist. He used to be the President of the Institute of Physics.

Sir Roy Sambles comes from a town called Callington in Cornwall. He studied physics at Imperial College London. There, he earned his first degree and his PhD. He has written over 550 scientific papers. In 2002, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a big honor for scientists.

What Sir Roy Sambles Studied

Sir Roy Sambles was a professor at the University of Exeter from 1991 to 2022. He spent his career studying how light interacts with different materials. His team at Exeter looked at many interesting things.

They studied liquid crystal devices. These are used in screens for televisions and computer displays. They also looked at the shiny, iridescent wings of butterflies. This research helps us understand natural colors.

His team also explored surface plasmons and microwave photonics. These studies can help create very sensitive ways to detect materials. For example, they could be used for medical tests. They also help improve communication using light and microwaves.

In 2008, he joined the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. This group helps decide what science projects get funding.

Awards and Honors

Sir Roy Sambles has received many important awards for his work.

  • 1998 - He won the George William Gray medal. This award is for work with liquid crystals.
  • 2002 - He was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
  • 2003 - He received the Young Medal and Prize. This was for his excellent research in optics, which is the study of light.
  • 2012 - He was given the Faraday Medal and Prize. This award recognized his groundbreaking work in experimental physics.

In 2020, he was made a Knight Bachelor. This means he can use the title "Sir." He received this honor for his important scientific research and for sharing science with others.

His Life Outside of Science

Roy Sambles is married to Sandra. They have three children.

He is also a Methodist local preacher. He has been preaching for over 30 years. He shares his faith in churches in Mid Devon.
