College Career Highlights
Roy Tarpley was a star player at the University of Michigan. He was recognized as a 3rd-Team All-American in both 1985 and 1986.
Leading the Wolverines
During the 1984–85 season, Tarpley helped his team, the Wolverines, win the Big Ten championship. He scored an average of 19.0 points and grabbed 10.4 rebounds per game that season. For his amazing performance, he was named the Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year.
On February 7, 1985, Roy scored his highest number of points in a single game, getting 31 points against Purdue. In his final year of college, he set a school record for the most blocked shots in one game. He led his team in blocked shots every year he played in college. He also led the team in scoring and rebounding in all but his first year. By March 2014, he was the Wolverines' all-time leader in blocked shots with 251. He finished his college career averaging 13.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Dallas Mavericks (1986–1991)
In 1986, the Dallas Mavericks chose Roy Tarpley as the seventh pick in the first round of the NBA draft. In his very first season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team, showing he was one of the best new players.
The next year, he won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award by averaging 13.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. During the 1988 NBA Playoffs, Tarpley and the Mavericks almost reached the NBA Finals, but they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in a close seven-game series. In that series, Roy averaged 15.9 points, 13 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks. On November 9, 1988, he scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a game against the Phoenix Suns.
Roy's time in the NBA faced some challenges. After playing six games into the 1989–90 season, he was suspended by the league. He faced another suspension in March 1991. A few months later, after more issues, he was no longer allowed to play in the league.
Brief Return to Dallas (1994–1995)
Tarpley briefly returned to the Mavericks in 1994. However, in December 1995, he was permanently banned from the NBA due to not following the rules of a special program he was in. He ended his NBA career with averages of 12.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Roy Tarpley later took legal action against the Dallas Mavericks and the NBA. He said that not letting him play again went against the Americans with Disabilities Act. This law helps protect people with disabilities. The case was settled outside of court in January 2009.
Playing in Europe
After his time in the NBA, Roy Tarpley played for several professional basketball teams in Europe. He played for teams like Aris, Olympiacos, Iraklis, and Esperos Kallitheas in Greece's top basketball league.
In the 1992–93 FIBA European Cup season, he helped his team, Sato Aris, win the FIBA Saporta Cup, which is a big European basketball competition. The final game was played in Turin.
The next year, Roy reached the EuroLeague Final, which is the highest level of European club basketball. He played with Olympiacos in the 1994 EuroLeague Final Four in Tel Aviv. That same year, he led the EuroLeague in rebounds, averaging 12.8 per game. With Olympiacos, Roy also helped his team win the Greek League championship and the Greek Cup.
Later Career with Michigan Mayhem (2005–2006)
Roy Tarpley continued to play basketball later in his career. He joined the Michigan Mayhem team in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) during part of the 2005–2006 season. He was chosen to play in the CBA All-Star Game, but he couldn't play because of a hand injury.
