Royal Terence Ivey (pronounced roy-AL; born December 20, 1981) is an American basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He also serves as the head coach for the South Sudan national team. He led them in the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. Before becoming a coach, Ivey played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns. He then played for 10 years in the NBA.

Early Life and College Basketball
Royal Ivey was born in Harlem, a part of New York City. He started playing basketball at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. He helped his team win a championship there. After high school, he attended Blair Academy for an extra year of studies.
Ivey then played college basketball at the University of Texas at Austin. He became a record-holder for the school. He started 126 games, which is more than any other player in Texas Longhorns history.
Playing in the NBA
Royal Ivey was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2004 NBA draft. He was the 37th player picked overall. He played for the Hawks for a few seasons.
Later, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2007. In 2008, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers. He played for the 76ers for a couple of years. In 2010, he was traded back to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Ivey then signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2010. He had a big moment with the Thunder in 2012. His team reached the NBA Finals, but they lost to the Miami Heat. After that, he returned to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012. He also had a brief return to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2014.
His NBA playing career ended in 2014. He briefly played for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China before becoming a coach.
Coaching Career Begins
In 2014, Royal Ivey started his coaching career. He became an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Blue. This team is part of the NBA's minor league, called the NBA Development League.
In 2016, he moved up to become an assistant coach for the main Oklahoma City Thunder team. He helped players develop their skills.
In 2018, Ivey joined the New York Knicks as an assistant coach. He worked with head coach David Fizdale. He stayed with the Knicks even after Fizdale left.
In 2020, the Brooklyn Nets hired Ivey as an assistant coach. He worked under head coach Steve Nash. In 2023, he joined the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach.
Coaching South Sudan
In 2021, Royal Ivey took on a special role. He became the head coach of the South Sudan men's national basketball team. South Sudan is one of the newest countries in the world. He led the team in their first major tournament, AfroBasket 2021.
Under Ivey's coaching, South Sudan won their first AfroBasket game. They made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament. This was a big achievement for the young country.
Ivey helped South Sudan make history again in 2023. They qualified for their first-ever World Cup. They did this by winning all their qualifying games. At the 2023 World Cup, they finished as the best African team. This earned them a spot in the 2024 Olympics. It was their first time ever qualifying for the Olympics in basketball.
At the 2024 Olympics, Ivey and South Sudan played well. They won their first game against Puerto Rico. Even though they lost their other games, their team was praised by many for their exciting play.
Personal Life
Royal Ivey was named after his grandfather, Roy Allen. His grandfather was a pioneer in television. He was one of the first African-American stage directors to work in TV.
During a break in the NBA season in 2011, Ivey went back to college. He finished his degree at the University of Texas. He studied applied learning and development. In 2023, he married Deanna Herrington.
