Royal Terence Ivey (ROY-al; born December 20, 1981) is an American basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Ivey also coaches the South Sudan national team. He led them in the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. Before coaching, he played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns. He then spent 10 years playing in the NBA.

Early Life and College Basketball
Royal Ivey was born in Harlem, a part of New York City. He played basketball at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. He helped his team win a championship there. After high school, he spent a year at Blair Academy.
Ivey then played college basketball at the University of Texas at Austin. He started 126 games during his college career. This was a record for the school at the time.
Professional Playing Career
Royal Ivey was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2004 NBA draft. He was the 37th player picked overall.
Playing for Different NBA Teams
Ivey played for several teams during his NBA career. In 2007, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. The next year, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers. He left the 76ers briefly but then re-signed with them in August 2009.
In February 2010, Ivey was traded back to the Milwaukee Bucks. Later that year, he signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played in the NBA Finals with the Thunder in 2012. However, his team lost to the Miami Heat.
Ivey returned to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012. He signed with the Atlanta Hawks again in 2013, but they let him go soon after. In January 2014, he had a short contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. After that, he played for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China for a short time. This marked the end of his 10-year playing career.

After his playing career, Royal Ivey became a coach.
Early Coaching Roles
In September 2014, Ivey became an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Blue. This team is part of the NBA Development League. In 2016, he moved up to become an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In June 2018, Ivey joined the New York Knicks as an assistant coach. He worked under head coach David Fizdale. He stayed with the Knicks even after Fizdale left. In November 2020, the Brooklyn Nets hired Ivey as an assistant coach.
In July 2023, Ivey was hired by the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach.
Coaching the South Sudan National Team
In May 2021, Royal Ivey took on a special role. He became the head coach of the South Sudan national team. South Sudan is the youngest country in the world.
He coached the team in their first major tournament, AfroBasket 2021. South Sudan won their first game against Uganda. They made it to the quarterfinals but were stopped by Tunisia.
Under Ivey's coaching, South Sudan made history. They qualified for their first-ever World Cup in 2023. They did this by winning all their qualifying games. Then, they earned a spot in the 2024 Olympics. They were the best African team at the 2023 World Cup.
At the 2024 Olympics, Ivey's team won their first game against Puerto Rico. They later lost to Serbia and the United States. This ended their Olympic journey in the first round. Even though they were eliminated, many people praised the team for how well they played.
Personal Life
During a break in the NBA season in 2011, Ivey went back to the University of Texas. He finished his degree in applied learning and development. In 2023, he married Deanna Herrington.
