The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum is a fantastic place to discover the history of a famous Scottish army regiment. It displays amazing collections from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the older regiments that joined to form it. You can find this museum inside the historic Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. It is located in the New Barracks, which were built a long time ago, between 1796 and 1799.

History of the Museum

This museum brings together the collections of two important older regiments. These were the 3rd Carabiniers and The Royal Scots Greys. The 3rd Carabiniers was itself formed when two other regiments, the 3rd Dragoon Guards and the 6th Dragoon Guards, combined in 1922.

The museum first opened its doors in 1995. The Queen herself officially opened it back then. It was originally located in the basement of the New Barracks. In 2006, the museum moved to a new spot above ground within the same barracks. The Queen returned to officially re-open it on July 7, 2006.

What You Can See: Collections

The museum has many interesting things on display. You can see old uniforms, shiny medals, different types of weapons, and special regalia. There are also items related to the music of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

Famous Items on Display

  • The French Imperial Eagle: One of the most exciting things to see is a special French flag symbol called the French Imperial Eagle. A brave soldier named Sergeant Charles Ewart from the Royal Scots Greys captured it. He took it from the French army during the famous Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. This was a huge victory for the British!
  • Sir Ranulph Fiennes's Gear: You can also see military gear and personal items from the famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He used to serve in this regiment.
  • Victoria Cross Medal: Another very important item is the Victoria Cross medal. This is the highest award for bravery in the British military. It was given to Sergeant Henry Ramage of the Royal Scots Greys. He earned it during the Crimean War.

Music of the Pipes and Drums

The museum's gift shop sells music from the regiment's Pipes and Drums. Their song "Amazing Grace" became a huge hit in 1972. It reached number one on the music charts in many countries. These included the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.
