The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum is a cool place to learn about military history! It shows off amazing collections from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the older army groups that came before them. You can find it inside the historic Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. The museum is in a building called the New Barracks, which was built a long time ago, between 1796 and 1799.

Discovering the Museum's History

How the Museum Started

This museum brings together collections from two important army groups. These were the 3rd Carabiniers and The Royal Scots Greys. The 3rd Carabiniers was formed in 1922. It combined two older groups: the 3rd Dragoon Guards and the 6th Dragoon Guards.

Opening and Moving

The museum first opened its doors in 1995. The Queen herself officially opened it. At first, it was in the basement of the New Barracks. Later, in 2006, the museum moved to a new spot. It went to the ground floor of the same building. The Queen came back to officially re-open it on July 7, 2006.

Exploring the Collections

What You Can See

The museum has many interesting things to see. You can find old uniforms, shiny medals, and different weapons. There are also special items called regalia and even music from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

Famous Items on Display

One of the most exciting things to see is a special flag called the French Imperial Eagle. This eagle was captured by a brave soldier named Sergeant Charles Ewart. He was part of the Royal Scots Greys. He captured it from the French army during the famous Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.

The museum also has items from the famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He served with the regiment. You can see his military and personal items. Another important item is the Victoria Cross. This is a very special medal for bravery. It was given to Sergeant Henry Ramage of the Royal Scots Greys. He earned it during the Crimean War.

The Gift Shop and Music

Don't forget to check out the gift shop! They sell music from the museum's own Pipes and Drums. Their song "Amazing Grace" was a huge hit. It reached number one on the music charts in many countries in 1972. These countries included the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.
