Royal Tru, often just called Royal, is a yummy fruit-flavored soft drink. It has bubbles, like soda! This drink is owned by The Coca-Cola Company. You can only find it in the Philippines. Royal Tru first came out in 1922. It was made by the original San Miguel Brewery. In 2007, Coca-Cola bought the brand. Now, Royal Tru is like the Philippine version of Coca-Cola's Fanta drink.

The Story of Royal Tru

The Royal brand started in 1922. It was made by the original San Miguel Brewery. This was their first bubbly, non-alcoholic drink. In 1927, San Miguel became the first company outside the U.S. to bottle Coca-Cola. Royal Tru-Orange, with its orange flavor, became the most famous Royal drink.

Royal Tru's Ownership Changes

In 1981, San Miguel created a new company. It was called Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI). This company handled all their soft drinks. It was a partnership with The Coca-Cola Company. San Miguel still owned the Royal brand until 2007. Then, San Miguel sold Royal and its share in CCBPI to The Coca-Cola Company.

In 2013, CCBPI changed its name. It became Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, Inc. This happened when a Mexican company, Coca-Cola FEMSA, joined in. Later, in 2018, the company changed its name again. It became Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI). This was after Bottling Investments Group (BIG) bought half of the company.

Famous Ad Campaigns

Royal Tru-Orange became very popular in the mid-1980s. This was after the Philippines became a democracy again. The drink's logo and recipe changed. It no longer had orange pulp. To promote it, a new ad campaign started. It starred a teen model named RJ Ledesma. He played a character called Joey. The first TV ad showed Joey's friends encouraging him to talk to a girl named Jenny. A famous film director, Lino Brocka, directed this ad.

In 1992, Royal Tru-Orange used the slogan "Ito Ang Gusto Ko!" This means "This is what I want!" It came from a song by the late Francis Magalona. Magalona himself appeared in the ads. He rapped a changed version of his song as a jingle. An edited version of this ad was shown again in 2009 after Magalona passed away. The slogan was used again in 2024. This time, it had a new song sung by model and singer Maymay Entrata. The song is based on a 2024 worldwide campaign for Fanta. It brought back a 2003 campaign with the words "wanna Fanta, don't you wanna?".
