Sunkist (also known as Sunkist Soda) is a popular brand of soft drinks. It's mostly famous for its delicious orange flavor. Sunkist first came out in 1979. It competes with other well-known orange sodas like Fanta and Orange Crush.

The Story of Sunkist Soda

How Sunkist Soda Began

Sunkist soda started when Sunkist Growers gave permission to the General Cinema Corporation to make the drink. General Cinema was a big company that bottled Pepsi-Cola drinks. The idea for Sunkist soda came from a person named Mark Stevens. He saw that orange was the third most popular soft drink flavor around the world. This was a big reason to create a new orange soda.

Developing the Perfect Orange Soda

During 1977 and 1978, a lot of research was done to make Sunkist soda just right. Scientists and experts worked on getting the taste, color, and fizziness perfect. Sunkist was first introduced in New York City. It was made by The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York City.

When Sunkist Soft Drinks first started, it had only five main employees. These included Mark Stevens, who was the president. Soon after, Sunkist soda became available all across the country. Many big Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola bottling companies helped distribute it.

Sunkist's Rise to Popularity

The advertisements for Sunkist soda used the slogan "fun, sun and the beach." They even used the famous song "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys in their TV and radio commercials. By 1980, Sunkist Orange Soda became the number one orange soda in the United States. It was also the tenth best-selling soft drink overall.

Unlike many other orange sodas, Sunkist contains a small amount of caffeine. It has about 19 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce can. In 2010, there was a time when some Sunkist soda was accidentally made with too much caffeine. This made some people feel sick, and the company had to recall those drinks.

Who Owns Sunkist Now?

In late 1984, the company that made Sunkist Soft Drinks was sold to Del Monte. From late 1986 until 2008, Cadbury Schweppes produced Sunkist. Today, Keurig Dr Pepper makes Sunkist in the United States. Sunkist is still the most popular orange soda in the country.

Sunkist soda is also sold in other parts of the world. In the UK, it was sold by Nichols plc. In Australia, it's sold by Asahi Beverages, and their version does not have caffeine. In Canada, a caffeine-free orange drink called C'Plus is sold, which also has a little Sunkist juice. In the Philippines, Sunkist is currently sold by Asia Brewery.

Different Sunkist Flavors

Keurig Dr Pepper makes many different flavors of Sunkist. Besides the classic Orange, you can find Diet Orange, Grape, Strawberry, Cherry Limeade, Pineapple, Lemonade, Diet Lemonade, Peach, Fruit Punch, Pink Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, Berry Lemonade, Watermelon Lemonade, and Orange Mango.
