The Story of Sunkist Soda
Sunkist soda was first created by a company called Sunkist Growers. They gave permission to General Cinema Corporation to make the drink. This company was a big bottler for Pepsi-Cola at the time.
The idea for Sunkist soda came from Mark Stevens. He saw that orange was the third most popular soft drink flavor worldwide. This was a big reason why he thought Sunkist would be a success.
Developing the Drink
From 1977 to 1978, a lot of research and development happened. Scientists worked on getting the taste, color, and fizz just right. Sunkist soda was first launched in New York City. It quickly became available across the country.
Early on, Sunkist Soft Drinks had only five main employees. Mark Stevens was the president. They worked hard to make Sunkist a popular drink.
Sunkist's Rise to Popularity
The advertising slogan for Sunkist was "fun, sun and the beach." They used TV and radio ads with the famous song "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys. This helped make the brand well-known.
By 1980, Sunkist Orange Soda became the number one orange soda in the United States. It was also the tenth best-selling soft drink overall. Unlike many other orange sodas, Sunkist contains a small amount of caffeine.
Ownership Changes Over Time
In 1984, Sunkist Soft Drinks was sold to Del Monte. Later, from 1986 to 2008, Cadbury Schweppes made Sunkist. Today, Keurig Dr Pepper produces Sunkist in the United States. Sunkist is still the most popular orange soda in the US.
Sunkist Around the World
Sunkist soda is sold in many different countries. In the United Kingdom, it was sold by Nichols plc. In Australia, Asahi Beverages sells Sunkist. The Australian version does not have caffeine.
In Canada, a caffeine-free orange drink called C'Plus is sold. It also has a small amount of Sunkist juice. In the Philippines, Sunkist was sold by Cosmos Bottling. Now, Asia Brewery sells it there.
