Life and Activism
After finishing his studies at the University of Havana Law School, Villena worked as a lawyer. He also enjoyed writing and published many poems and short stories in newspapers and magazines from 1917 until the late 1920s.
Speaking Out for Change
In 1923, Villena became well-known for his part in the "Protest of the Thirteen" (Protesta de los Trece). This was when thirteen writers and artists openly criticized the government of President Alfredo Zayas. Their brave actions led to the creation of the Grupo Minorista. This was a group of artists and thinkers who became very important in shaping Cuban culture and politics.
Fighting for Cuba's Future
Rubén Martínez Villena became even more involved in social and political struggles after meeting Julio Antonio Mella. Mella was one of the founders of the Communist Party of Cuba. Together, they fought against governments that were seen as being too controlled by the interests of other powerful countries, especially the United States. This situation was sometimes called neocolonialism, meaning a country was technically independent but still heavily influenced by another. In 1925, Villena even defended Mella in court when Mella was accused of criticizing President Zayas.
Later Years and Legacy
Villena later became ill with tuberculosis. He traveled to the United States and the Soviet Union to seek treatment, even visiting the Caucasus Mountains. When he returned to Cuba in 1932, he was very sick. Despite his illness, he played a key role in organizing a huge general strike during 1932 and 1933. This strike helped to bring an end to the government of Gerardo Machado.
Rubén Martínez Villena passed away in Havana on January 16, 1934, at the La Esperanza Sanatory. He is remembered as a dedicated revolutionary who fought for a better Cuba.
