This small bird is about 16 centimeters (6 inches) long. It weighs between 26 and 33 grams, which is about as much as a few quarters!
Male vs. Female
- Male ruby-crowned tanagers are shiny black. They have a hidden red patch on their head, like a tiny crown! They usually only show this red crown when they are excited. When they fly, you can see white patches under their wings.
- Female tanagers are light brown. They have some faint black lines under their throat and darker wings.
Both male and female birds have cone-shaped beaks, black legs, and black feet.
Where Do Ruby-Crowned Tanagers Live?
Ruby-crowned tanagers live in a wide area. You can find them in most of southern Brazil. They also live in eastern Paraguay and the Misiones Province in Argentina.

- Warm, wet lowland forests.
- Wet mountain forests.
- Even areas where forests used to be, but have changed a lot.
What Do Ruby-Crowned Tanagers Eat?
Ruby-crowned tanagers enjoy a varied diet. They eat lots of different things, including:

Sometimes, they follow groups of army ants. This is because the ants stir up other insects, making them easier for the tanagers to catch. These birds will also visit feeding stations if people put out fruit for them.
How Do Ruby-Crowned Tanagers Behave?
Ruby-crowned tanagers often live in pairs. However, you might also see them alone or in slightly larger groups. They are very active birds. They move quickly from one fruit tree to another, always looking for their next meal!
