Early Life and Education
Rukiya Bernard was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her mother, Nyakiringa Magugu, owned an African art store. Her father, Gilbert Bernard, owned a car wash.
From a young age, Rukiya's parents encouraged her to explore both sports and arts. She played basketball and ran track. She also studied classical ballet, karate, and piano. She later attended Ryerson University and graduated with honors from their theater program.
Acting Career Highlights
Rukiya Bernard began her acting career with a supporting role in the award-winning film Our America (2002). In this movie, she played the character of Sophie Newman.
She has appeared in many popular TV shows over the years. These include SyFy's Van Helsing, where she played a main role. She also had roles in The CW’s Supernatural and NBC’s Eureka. Other shows she's been in are Sanctuary, Stargate Universe, and The Magicians.
