Rulyrana saxiscandens is a type of frog that belongs to the Centrolenidae family. These frogs are sometimes called "glass frogs" because some of them have clear skin.

This special frog lives only in one specific place. It is found in the Cordillera Escalera mountain range in Peru. You can find it roughly between the cities of Tarapoto and Moyobamba.

About This Frog's Name

Scientists give names to all living things. Sometimes, they discover that different names were given to the same animal. This happened with Rulyrana saxiscandens.

In 2014, scientists realized that three different frog names actually belonged to the same species. These names were Rulyrana saxiscandens, Cochranella tangarana, and Cochranella croceopodes. All three names were first described in the same science paper.

When this happens, scientists follow special rules. They use something called the "Principle of the First Reviser." This rule helps them decide which name to keep. Evan Twomey and his team chose Rulyrana saxiscandens as the main name. The other two names became "synonyms," meaning they are different names for the same frog.

Where This Frog Lives

Rulyrana saxiscandens frogs like to live near water. They are often found along small streams and creeks. You might also spot them in the misty areas near waterfalls.

These frogs live at different heights in the mountains. They have been found between 517 and 1,047 meters (about 1,700 to 3,435 feet) above sea level. They prefer places that are not too changed by people. However, they can sometimes live in forests that have grown back after being cut down.
