History of Rumsey
How Rumsey Got Its Name
A post office was first set up near the Rumsey community in 1878. At that time, it was called "Rock." This name came from a nearby rock landmark.
In 1888, the post office moved about two miles north. It moved to the end of the Vaca Valley and Clear Lake Railroad line. When it moved, its name was changed to "Rumsey." This new name was given in honor of Captain D.C. Rumsey, who owned the land where the post office was relocated.
The 1906 Earthquake and Cache Creek
The famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake also affected Rumsey. North of Rumsey, a large landslide temporarily blocked Cache Creek. This happened on a Tuesday night after the earthquake.
The water level in Cache Creek started to drop. In some places, the creek even became dry. Officials from the local Water Company investigated and found that a landslide had created a dam across the creek. This landslide happened near the Leonard ranch in Lake County.
Eventually, the water broke through the landslide dam. This caused serious flooding in the Rumsey area.
